Which is better?

Plastic decking is a budget-friendly choice that requires relatively little maintenance. But how do plastic deck boards compare with composite wood?

Hang on - what’s the difference?

Many people use the terms ‘plastic decking’ and ‘composite decking’ interchangeably, but there is a crucial difference between these two products.

Plastic decking is made of 100% synthetic materials. Composite decking – also known as wood plastic composite (WPC) decking – is made by blending synthetic materials with natural wood fibre.

In other words, composite decking is a combination of plastic decking and real wood.

So which should I buy? Plastic or composite?

A wooden deck has to be sanded and stained every so often to keep it in tip-top condition. Neither plastic decking nor WPC decking require this sort of maintenance, which is great news for homeowners are short on time and/or DIY skills.

That said, if you still want the look of an old-fashioned timber deck, composite decking is probably a better choice than plastic due to its wood content and more authentic-looking grain.

Generally speaking, plastic decking is cheaper than composite wood. If you’re looking to deck out your garden for the lowest possible price, plastic deck boards will likely make the smaller dent in your bank balance – at least to begin with.

However, there are some lower-cost composite decking products starting to trickle into the market, and it may be argued that composite decking offers better value for money in the long run.

This is where WPC deck boards really distinguish themselves from their all-plastic counterparts. While it obviously depends on the manufacturer to some extent, composite decking products boast a much longer lifespan (on average) than plastic boards.

Be sure to check the warranty when purchasing any decking product, because this can be anywhere from a few years to a few decades. Overall, though, composite decking lasts far longer.
